Birthday celebrations usually mean birthday cakes. However, in the state of Odisha, it also means Pitha : an indigenous pancake-style delicacy. As Ootkal turns one today, hers’s a recipe for one of the simplest yet most delicious pitha recipe from the Odia kitchen.

The ‘Guda Nadia Idli Pitha’ is filled with the goodness of coconut and richness of jaggery. No need to wait for an occasion though, you can whip up this tasty yet healthy treat any day.


  1. Rice- 1 cup
  2. Urad dal/ biri- 1 cup
  3. Jaggery- 1 cup
  4. Coconut- 1 cup, grated
  5. Pepper
  6. Cardamom powder
  7. Baking soda
  8. Salt
  9. Oil (to grease)


  1. Mix the rice and urad dal/ biri in a bowl
  2. Soak in water for 6-7 hours
  3. Grind the mixture into a smooth batter
  4. Let it rest for 5-6 hours
  5. For the stuffing, add 1 cup jaggery in a kadai
  6. Let it melt on low heat
  7. Add 1 cup grated coconut
  8. Mix well for 2-3 mins
  9. Turn off the stove and set aside the stuffing
  10. Add a pinch of salt to the batter
  11. Add a pinch of baking soda
  12. Gently mix the batter, do not over mix
  13. Grease the idli plate with vegetable oil
  14. Spread the batter inside the mould
  15. Add the stuffing on top then cover with batter
  16. Put the plates inside the idli maker
  17. Let it steam for 15-20mins on medium flame
  18. Guda nadiya idlis are ready!
