Sukiri Giri, a 58-year-old woman from Odisha’s Balasore district, was arrested for allegedly hiring contract killers to get her daughter Shibani Nayak (36) killed. According to police official Pravash Pal, Giri had paid ₹ 50,000 to 32-year-old Pramod Jena and two other contract killers.

The police investigation reveals that Shibani was involved in the illegal liquor trade, which enraged her mother.

Another police officer said Giri had done an advance payment of ₹ 8,000 to the contract killers.

On January 12, the contract killers killed Shibani with stones and some blunt objects. Her body was found under a bridge in Nagram village.

While Promod has been arrested by the police, a manhunt is underway to nab two others involved in the murder.

Shibani was married but had been staying with her mother in Raisuana village for the past 11 years. She has two daughters, who Giri didn’t want to be affected by Shibani’s illegal activities. Giri had reportedly tried to persuade her daughter to leave the illegal business on many occasions.
