Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s security was beefed up after he received an anonymous letter alleging that contract killers have been hired to kill him. Soon after this, the state government ordered an inquiry, and police were alerted. The letter in English mentions that contract killers with sophisticated firearms could attack CM Patnaik anytime.

“I would like to inform that some contact killers (illegible).. to kill you. These contact killers are professional criminals, equipped with latest weapons like AK-47 and semi-automatic pistols. I would like to tell you that you can be killed anytime, so please be aware…,” read the letter, stating the weapons have already been brought into the state. The letter went on to mention that the mastermind of the conspiracy hatched against him lives in Nagpur.

After the letter was received on January 5, Special Secretary (Home) Santosh Bala ordered the state’s director general of police, director-general of intelligence and the commissioner of police, Bhubaneswar, to investigate the matter.

Mr. Bala informed that the Chief Minister’s security at his residence, the secretariat and during his journey to various places will be assessed and tightened.
