Male government employees, who are single parents, are now entitled to take leaves for child care, announced Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Monday. While briefing about some of the major reforms brought by Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) under the Modi government, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh said today that the male employees of the government are also now entitled to Child Care Leave,” the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, said in a statement.

According to the Ministry, the ‘single male parents’ include employees who are widower, unmarried or divorcee as they might be expected to take care of a child single-handedly. Singh called it a path-breaking reform that will help the government servants take up their personal responsibilities along with the professional commitment.

An employee can avail the Leave Travel Concession (LTC) even when he or she is on a child care leave. The leaves could be granted at the 100 percent salary for the first year, followed by 80 percent leave salary for the second year.

In case of a disabled child, earlier an employee could avail child care leave for the child less than the age of 22 years. However, now a government servant can avail the leave for a disabled child of any age.
