Chenna Poda, which literally means Roasted Cheese in Odia is the favourite dessert of many a generations in Odisha. It is a must have during the festive season. This simple recipe requires neither any major kitchen apparatus like oven nor individual expertise. The humble kadhai, a staple of every household, is enough for this delicious recipe. So whip up this delicacy on the occasion of Mahastami and enjoy with your family and friends post hearty meal. Let the festivities begin!


1. Milk- 2lts
2. Lemon juice- 2-3 tbsps
3. Semolina/ sooji- 3 tbsps
4. Green cardamom powder- ½ tbsp
5. Sugar- 1 cup
6. Clarifies butter/ Ghee- 2-3 tbsps
7. Cashew nuts- 10-15


1. Add milk in a vessel to boil
2. Once the milk starts boiling add 2 tbsps of lemon juice and water each
3. After sometime, the milk will start to curdle
4. Turn off the stove when the water separates
5. Strain the chhena, leave it slightly watery
6. Avoid overstraining and making it completely dry
7. Wash the chhena in cold water
8. Mash the chhena for 3-4 mins to make it soft
9. Add the sooji
10. Add the sugar
11. Add the ghee
12. Add the green cardamom powder and few cashew nuts
13. Mix well
14. Let it sit for 20 mins
15. Grease a cake tin with ghee
16. Add the mixture to the tin 17. Place a kadai on low flame, keep a raised stand inside it
18. Keep the cake tin on it
19. Garnish with cashew nuts
20. Cover the lid and let it bake for 2-2.5 hours on low flame
21. Turn off the stove when the knife comes out clean

Note: You can also keep greased banana leaf at the cake tin
