Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik became a victim to the fake news spreading on the internet, in which a study credited to the United Kingdom’s Oxford University and Northeastern University of the United States appeared heaping praise on Odisha’s Ganjam district for combating the deadly COVID-19. Mumbai’s slum area Dharavi was the second Indian state mentioned in the fake report.

On October 8, a website called pledgetimes.com reported how the Oxford University research found Odisha’s Ganjam and Dharavi of Mumbai managed to “imprison Corona”.

Many of the news websites picked up the news and quoted: “Oxford University study praised the Ganjam and Dharavi model of fighting the pandemic”.

“Ganjam earned praise from @UniofOxford for its successful model of #COVID-19 infection prevention. The district excelled in #CovidManagement by empowering sarpanchs, forming committees in villages for intensive screening and by ensuring proper healthcare,” Office of Odisha CM Patnaik quoted the fake report in a tweet.

District Magistrate of Ganjam district joined in with a tweet, saying: “Ganjam Model of COVID Management got recognized by @UniofOxford for successful infection prevention strategies. Our gratitude and appreciation to Team Ganjam.”

However, both of them deleted the tweets after realising that it is a fake report.
