Odisha’s ruling party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) senior leader Pradeep Maharathy, recently serving as Pipili MLA, died at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Sunday. He was 65-year-old and is survived by wife Prativa Maharathy, a son Rudra Pratap Maharathy and a daughter Pallavi Maharathy.

Associated with the BJP for two decades, Maharathy served as an MLA seven time in his political career.

On September 14, Maharathy was diagnosed with COVID-19 and admitted to the hospital in Bhubaneswar. Since Friday, Maharathy was on ventilator support.

Maharathy was born on July 4, 1955, in Pipili. In the SCS College, Puri, he started his political carrier as a student leader. In 1885, Maharathy joined Janata Dal (JD) and Biju Janata Dal later in 2000. For Janata Dal, Maharathy contested from the Pipili constituency in the assembly elections twice in 1985 and 1990 and secured victory on both the occasions.

Maharathy became a part of the state Cabinet in 2001, heading the portfolio of Agriculture and Fisheries. He was appointed the Minister of Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Supply Department in 2017.

Odisha received Krishi Karman Award for four consecutive years when Maharathy was the Agriculture Minister.
