Veteran Odia actor Ajit Das passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Sunday. He is known for films like Hakim Babu and Tundabaida.

The reason behind his death is unknown. Ajit Das was admitted to COVID-19 hospital on September 1. According to the rules, hospital authorities cannot disclose the identity of a coronavirus patient. It has to be declared by the concerned patient, local authorities or the government.

A National School of Drama alumnus, Das, acted in over 60 Odia movies besides producing a couple of films. He had also served as a head of the department of drama at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneswar.

Born in 1949 in Mayurbhanj, Das started his journey in cinema with 1976 movie Sindura Bindu. Maa (1992), Nandini I Love You (2008) and Kebe Tame Naha Kebe Mu Nahi (2012) are some of his other known films. His was last seen in 2018 movie Ishq Puni Thare.

The CMO Odisha wrote on Twitter, “CM @Naveen_Odisha has expressed deep grief at the demise of veteran Odia film personality Ajit Das. CM added that the icon’s departure has created a great void in the Odia film industry which will take years to fill”.

Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted, “He had enticed Odia cine viewers for a long period with his performance. With his death, there is an end of an era in Odia film industry.”

“I am saddened by the demise of Ajit Das. His absence will create a big loss to the Odia film industry,” said union minister Pratap Sarangi.

Das is survived by his wife and three daughters.
