A rare plant with only four leaves on it has been sold for over rupees four lakh following an intense bidding war on New Zealand’s biggest trading site, Trade Me. The internet is curious to know what makes this tiny plant’s value so high.

The answer is that this houseplant is a rare variegated rhaphidophora tetrasperma, which is also known as Philodendron Minima. The value of plant is high because of a yellow variegation that it has on each of its four leaves.

For the unversed, a variegated plant is rare as it takes a lot of time and patience to grow. Naturally, it is hard to find such a plant and thus, the horticulturalists and plant collectors are always on lookout of such variegated plants.

“This plant has currently has 4 leaves with stunning yellow variegation on every leaf!” the seller of the plant wrote on Trade Me.

NZ Gardener editor Jo McCarroll explained: “It’s the green in the leaves that lets plants photosynthesise. The less green, the less surface area they have to produce the sugars they need for growth and repair.”

“A few variegated leaves on a fully green stem does not guarantee that future growth will be variegated. But I assume that the person spending that amount of money would know enough about plants to know that. They’re probably planning to propagate and sell future plants to make money,” he added.
