Former President and veteran Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee passed away in Delhi on Monday, confirmed his son Abhijit Mukherjee. The Bharat Ratna, who acted as the President of India from 2012 to 2017, was 84-year-old when he breathed last at the Army’s Research and Referral Hospital.

“With a Heavy Heart , this is to inform you that my father Shri Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away inspite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital and prayers, duas and prarthanas from people throughout India ! I thank all of You,” Abhijit said in a tweet.

Mukherjee was in coma following a brain surgery and had tested positive for the COVID-19 as well. The army hospital said Mukherjee had contracted lung infection that sent him into a septic shock.

On August 10, Mukherjee was admitted to the hospital and a clot in his brain was removed with a surgery the same day. Meanwhile, Mukherjee had contracted the deadly COVID-19 as well in the hospital.

“On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID-19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19,” he had tweeted.
