Odisha High Court Creates History by Allowing Same Sex Couple to Live in Together
In a first, the Orissa High Court passed a judgement to allow a woman live with her same-sex partner on Monday. A 24-year-old woman had filed a habeas corpus petition alleging that her partner was locked up by her mother and uncle at her home in Bari, Jajpur.
Earlier, the two women were in a live-in relationship.
Justice SK Mishra and Justice Savitri Ratho completed the hearing through video conferencing and asked the victim woman if she wants to stay with her same-sex partner.
The Orissa High Court bench also directed the Superintendent of Police, Jajpur, to ensure the protection to the two women after they start to live in together.
The bench told the victim woman it it no compulsion to stay with her partner and she could live with her parents as well only if she wants to. However, the victim woman categorically said that she wants to stay with the petitioner.
The victim woman went on to say that her family members are forcing her to marry a man of their choice.
According to the petitioner, the two women are in love since 2011 and a consensual relationship started in 2017.
