A farmer from Odisha, identified as 50-year-old Mahendra Das, died by suicide as his body was found hanging in Rajualibindha village of Bhadrak district. According to his family members and villagers, Mahendra was under depression as he was unable to clear debts due to losses incurred during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Reportedly, Mahendra’s wife and daughter-in-law had taken a loan of Rs 50,000 from four lenders, which the farmer could not repay.

The lenders and the Self Help Group (SHG) reportedly pressurised Mahendra to pay back the loan to avoid legal action against him. The helpless farmer, however, chose to escape the debt by committing suicide.
