Mayurbhanj’s Rajmata Bharati Rajya Lakshmi Bhanja Deo breathed her last at the age of 94 on Sunday night. She passed away at the Belgadia palace near Baripada in Mayurbhanj district. The news of her death was confirmed by a Twitter handle of Belgadia Palace.

Though the exact cause of her death is not known yet, it is reported that she died of the geriatric disease.

Belgadia Palace’s Twitter handle shared a note along with the caption that reads, “We are saddened by the news of the death of HH Rajmata of Mayurbhanj, Bharati Rajya Laxmi Devi. May her soul rest in peace”. In the note, late Rajmata has been described as an avid art and culture enthusiast who also had a passion for sports. The note further remembers her as a philanthropist and a strong advocate for women’s education and empowerment.

For the unversed, Rajmata Bharati was born on February 18, 1927, to the Nepalese King Bir Bikram Shah and Queen Kanti at the royal palace of Kathmandu, Nepal. She got married Maharaja of Mayurbhanj, Pradeep Chandra Bhanja Deo in 1952.

“She is succeeded by her 4 children and subsequent children and grandchildren,” read the note on Twitter. She has three daughters – Late Prabha Manjari Devi, Padma Manjari Devi, Sneha Rana and son, Praveen Chandra Bhanja Deo, who is the 47th ruler of Bhanja dynasty as well as former MLA.
