A groom’s father and brother were arrested and fined after a video of the marriage violating COVID-19 lockdown norms in Odisha’s Ganjam district went viral on the internet.

In the viral video, the guests at the wedding were seen dancing close to each other and that too without masks. Many of the guests were seen holding hands of each other, violating the social distancing norms to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Soon after the video surfaced on Twitter, an FIR was registered against the family members of the groom and bride, along with a penalty of Rs 50,000.

“On charge of violation of COVID-19 rules for marriage in Berhampur, Rs 50,000 fine was collected and FIR filed against both the parties,” Ganjam Collector VA Kulange said as quoted by PTI.

“Our joy should not ruin others’ lives,” he added.

A maximum number of 50 guests are allowed to attend a marriage, provided they all follow social distancing norms and wear masks.

The district collector added that guests who attended the Ganjam wedding will be sent to the government quarantine facility.

As per reports, the venue of the July 2 wedding — Gopalpur-on-Sea — has been sealed for a week.

The Ganjam district has reported 2,066 cases of coronavirus, with 20 deaths. Odisha’s total toll of deaths due to coronavirus stands at 34.
