The Ministry of Railways has invited Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to introduce 151 modern trains in operation for over 109 routes. The private investment, opened for running passenger trains, aims to attract investments of about Rs 30,000 crore.

“Ministry of Railways has invited RFQ for private participation for operation of passenger train services over 109 Origin Destination (OD) pairs of routes through introduction of 151 modern Trains. Each Train shall have a minimum of 16 coaches,” the Indian Railways said in a statement.

According to the national transporter, the private partner will be responsible to introduce modern technology, reduce transit time, create more jobs,  provide safety and world-class travel experience to passengers.

Despite being operated by private investors, the Railways ensured the majority of trains will be manufactured for a maximum speed of 160 kmph in India.

“There would be a substantial reduction in journey time. The running time taken by a train will be comparable to or faster than the fastest train of Indian Railways operating in the respective route,” the Railways stated.

The private investor will have the operation rights but the drivers and guards will be appointed by the Indian Railways.

“The operation of the trains by the private entity shall conform to the key performance indicators like punctuality, reliability, upkeep of trains, etc. Operation and maintenance of the passenger trains would be governed by standards & specifications and requirements specified by Indian Railways,” the statement read further.
