Over the years, many Hindu festivities like Holi, Diwali, Navratri and others have found an inimitable place of its own in the world. Of all others, Rath Yatra wins the show by being the most popular since it is rejoiced every year in more than 100 cities globally.

Rath Yatra in common parlance means Chariot Procession. The brief story behind this celebration goes this way – After being under the weather for a while, on this day Lord Jagannath along with his elder brother Balabhadra and younger sister Subhadra sets out from their home temple in Puri to their aunt’s house to savour poda pitha. The procession with three architecturally magnificent chariots of these siblings move through the streets blessing hundreds and thousands of devotees on their way. The scripture says that it always rains on this day – And It Does.

Rath Yatra is perhaps the largest chariot procession in the whole wide world.International Society For Krishna Consciousness’s (ISKCON’s) Hare Krishna movement spearheaded the task of spreading Krishna Dharma beyond territorial boundaries and that has also been a big impetus for the intercontinental celebration of this festival.
